Washington, March 6 (Xinhua) — The United States and Venezuela have agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations, the U.S. State Department announced Thursday.

Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with the United States in January 2019 due to ongoing American interference in its internal affairs. All diplomatic personnel at the US Embassy in Caracas left the country in March of that year.

On January 3, the US military carried out a large-scale operation against Venezuela, capturing the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, who were brought to the United States.

On January 31, an American diplomatic mission arrived in Caracas, marking the resumption of diplomatic contacts between the two countries. –0–
