Moscow, March 5 /Xinhua/ — Russia may stop natural gas supplies to European Union (EU) countries ahead of the announced deadline, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the Vesti news service on Wednesday.

Vladimir Putin recalled that the European Union had announced a ban on the purchase of Russian gas, which would come into effect gradually. "And now other markets are opening up. And perhaps it would be more advantageous for us to stop supplies to the European market right now. To move to the markets that are opening up and gain a foothold there. And here, too, I want to be clear – there is no political motive. But if they're going to shut us down in a month or two, it's better to stop now and move to countries that are reliable partners and gain a foothold there," he said.

At the same time, he noted that this was merely “thinking out loud,” and not a final decision. “I will definitely instruct the government to work on this issue together with our companies,” the Russian head of state said. –0–
