BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) — State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Spokesperson Chen Binhua expressed strong opposition at a press conference on Wednesday to Taiwan Chief Executive Lai Qingde's attempts to make a "transit stop" in the United States under any pretext or in any form.
Chen Binhua was thus commenting on media reports that the American side refused to allow Lai Qingde's "transit" trip through New York as part of his planned visit to some South American countries in August this year.
Mainland China firmly opposes any form of official contact between the US and Taiwan, Chen Binhua confirmed.
He said the United States should strictly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques, handle Taiwan-related issues with extreme caution, and stop sending any false signals to separatist forces advocating "Taiwan independence."
