JAKARTA, July 30 (Xinhua) — The Indonesian government is pushing ahead with a study on a proposal to extend the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail line to Surabaya to speed up integrated and efficient mobility across Java island, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoynaw said on Tuesday.

The proposed project will build on the success of the existing Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail line.

“President Prabowo Subianto has given a clear direction to extend the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway to Surabaya. This is more than just an extension; it is a bold vision to connect Jakarta and Surabaya through faster, cleaner and more integrated transport,” said A.H. Yudhoyno at the opening of the Indonesia RailwayTech 2025 exhibition in Jakarta.

"We are preparing a new regulatory framework to implement this idea. This could be a real breakthrough, significantly reducing travel time, increasing efficiency and bringing broad economic benefits by connecting cities, industries and ports across Java," he added.

The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail has attracted much public attention since it began commercial operations in October 2023, cutting travel time between Indonesia's largest city, Jakarta, and Bandung in West Java from more than three hours to just 46 minutes. –0–
