BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) — Preserving historical memory is the mission of today's youth, said Leonid Petukhin, deputy chairman of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society (RCFS), while leading the RCFS delegation at the World Youth Conference for Peace held in Beijing on Tuesday.

The event was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations under the motto “Together for Peace.” More than 3,000 people took part, including youth representatives from over 130 countries and various circles in China, as well as foreign students studying in China.

"World War II, the Great Patriotic War and the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression affected every family in both Russia and China. And today we celebrate the 80th anniversary of our victory. First of all, we must remember the price that both our countries paid. After all, we are talking about tens of millions of dead," L. Petukhin noted.

“And the mission of today’s youth, in addition to building a happy future, is to remember the enormous losses and heroism of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, what they did to save this world. And as youth, we will continue this history and this mission,” he added.

Following the conference, the World Youth Peace Initiative was published, calling on young people to be defenders of peace throughout the world, pioneers in inter-civilizational dialogue, supporters of mutually beneficial cooperation, and to become participants in the fight against climate change and supporters of science and technology for good.

During the document release ceremony, L. Petukhin and representatives of other countries read it out in parts on stage in different languages.

“Peace means creating an environment in which every young person can realize their potential, because every young person deserves a chance to do their best to achieve what they want and to show the world what they can do. So I am convinced that the meaning of peace is to ensure that the voice of every young person is heard,” shared the vice-chairman of the ORKD.

"The world is filled with different civilizations and cultures. In order to establish a proper dialogue between us, we must, first of all, understand each other. Without mutual understanding, there will be no success and no successful cooperation," he added.

Let us recall that at the invitation of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), from July 21 to 28, L. Petukhin, at the head of a Russian delegation of 15 people, including young teachers, students, and artists from 10 regions of Russia, took part in the 5th tour “Youth of Russia and China Walk the Road of Friendship”, visiting various places in China, including the cities of Jiujiang (Jiangxi Province, East China), Xiangtan and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (Hunan Province, Central China).

The World Youth Conference for Peace was organized by the CNDH jointly with the All-China Youth Federation. -0-
