Beijing, March 2 (Xinhua) — China values its traditional friendship with Iran and supports the country in defending its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and national dignity, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the statement during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, which took place at the initiative of the Iranian diplomat.
A. Araghchi briefed his Chinese counterpart on the latest developments in the region, noting that the United States launched a war against Iran for the second time during Iranian-American talks.
Noting that positive progress had been made between the two sides during the latest round of talks, he said the US side's actions violated all international legal norms and trampled Iran's red lines.
Iran has no choice but to defend itself with all its might, A. Araghchi emphasized.
Noting that China has publicly stated its fair position, A. Araghchi expressed hope that China will continue to play a positive role in preventing escalation of tensions in the region.
Wang Yi reaffirmed China's principled position on the current situation in Iran and expressed support for the Iranian side in protecting its justified and legitimate rights and interests.
He said China had already called on the United States and Israel to immediately cease military action, avoid further escalation of tensions and prevent the conflict from spreading to the entire Middle East.
China believes that in the current grave and complex situation, Iran is capable of maintaining domestic social stability and taking into account the reasonable concerns of its neighboring countries, as well as ensuring the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Iran, the Chinese diplomat added.
