On February 28, Russia celebrates Arctic Day, which aims to highlight the importance of exploring this rich but remote region and preserving its unique natural environment.

Rosneft makes a significant contribution to research in the Far North. Since 2012, the Company has been conducting the largest comprehensive Arctic exploration program since Soviet times. During this time, 64 expeditions have been organized in collaboration with key scientific institutes across the country.

Unprecedented expeditions explore the waters of the northern seas, the seabed, the coastal zone, glaciers and icebergs, and animal bioindicators. This work has yielded a vast array of scientific data, expanding our understanding of the polar regions and providing practical applications for their further development. The research results are also published in the Company's environmental atlases, accessible to scientists, experts, students from specialized universities, and the general public interested in the development of the Russian North.

In 2024, Rosneft began a new four-year biodiversity research cycle as part of its corporate Arctic ecosystem conservation program, dubbed "Tamura." The goal is to update information on the state of the region's key flora and fauna, including bioindicators. The program has already conducted 10 expeditions to study polar bears, wild reindeer, and valuable bird and fish species in the northern Krasnoyarsk Krai.

In 2025, the Company summarized the results of a joint environmental project with Innopraktika in the White Sea. The project participants retraced the route of the 1922-1926 expeditions of renowned Soviet hydrobiologist Konstantin Deryugin, who detailed the flora and fauna of the White Sea. Scientists analyzed secular changes in the region's marine ecosystems using Deryugin's methods and modern technologies, and assessed the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the Arctic ecology. The specialists concluded that the White Sea ecosystem remains stable. However, research revealed insufficient knowledge of the fauna of the Arctic seas: up to 30% of species retain an uncertain taxonomic status, meaning their place in biological classification is unclear, and significant work remains to be done to revise the fauna of the Arctic seas. At the same time, the specialists managed to describe species new to science.

In the area of innovative solutions, the Company, together with Innopraktika, developed the microbial product "Oceanida" for the removal of hydrocarbon pollution from northern seas. In 2025, the product received a positive conclusion from the state environmental review. The expert commission determined that the innovation complies with environmental protection requirements.

Rosneft is engaged in educational activities. In 2025, the Company, in collaboration with the non-governmental development institute Innopraktika, launched an online course of popular science lectures, "Arctic Wanderer: Polar Bear," and in 2023, "Flight Above the Ice: Seabirds of the Russian Arctic." The popular science lecture course, "Flight Above the Ice: Seabirds of the Russian Arctic," won the international Edtek Award. The courses are available to everyone on the Lectorium educational platform.
