Baghdad, March 1 (Xinhua) — An Iraqi Shiite militant group on Sunday claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks on military bases in Erbil province of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq where US forces are stationed.
In two separate statements, a pro-Iranian group calling itself Saraya Awliya al-Dam (Guardians of the Blood Units) and affiliated with Iraqi armed groups within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), said the attacks were carried out in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and in solidarity with Tehran.
Iranian state media confirmed on Sunday that Khamenei was killed in joint US-Israeli attacks the day before.
According to a Kurdish security source, air defense systems at a military base near Erbil International Airport intercepted several unmanned aerial vehicles on Sunday evening. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage.
