Baghdad, March 1 (Xinhua) — Iraqi government spokesman Basem al-Awadi on Sunday condemned the US-Israeli strike that killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it "blatant aggression" and a "criminal act" that violates international norms.

“We express our condolences to the Iranian people and the entire Islamic nation,” said B. al-Awadi, calling for an end to military actions that are escalating tensions in the region.

Iraqi authorities also declared three days of national mourning in memory of A. Khamenei, whose assassination led to violent protests outside the US embassy in Baghdad.

A source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry told Xinhua that at dawn, demonstrators protesting the US and Israeli attacks on Iran attempted to break through the entrance to the US embassy near the suspension bridge.

Iranian state media confirmed on Sunday that A. Khamenei was killed on Saturday in the US-Israeli attacks. –0–
