Tehran, March 1 (Xinhua) — Iran's Expediency Discernment Council has elected Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as a member of the country's interim governing council, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.
IRNA reported, citing Expediency Discernment Council spokesman Mohsen Dehnavi, that the move is in line with Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, which requires a lawyer from the Guardian Council to be part of the interim governing body.
M. Dehnavi noted that A. Arafi's appointment should ensure the continuity of the country's governance and that the Iranian Council of Experts will select a permanent leader as soon as possible.
Iran previously announced the creation of a three-member transitional leadership council to assume governance responsibilities following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the US-Israeli attacks on Saturday. The council also includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei.
The United States and Israel launched massive strikes against Iran on Saturday, prompting the Islamic Republic to attack Israeli and American targets across the Middle East.
