Washington, March 1 (Xinhua) — A diplomatic solution to Iran remains possible and has become "much easier now" following the US-Israeli strikes on the country and the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. US President Donald Trump stated this in a telephone interview with CBS News on Saturday evening.
"Of course it will be easier than it was the day before," he said, arguing that the attacks were effective and could pave the way for a diplomatic solution.
D. Trump said that “there are some good candidates” to lead Iran after the death of A. Khamenei, but did not provide details.
Speaking about Iran's retaliatory measures, the US President said: "This is what we expected."
“We thought they [the retaliatory measures] would be twice as strong,” said D. Trump. “So far, it’s less than we thought.”
Earlier on Saturday, announcing the death of A. Khamenei, US President Donald Trump said the large-scale military campaign against Iran would continue.
“However, intense and targeted bombing will continue without interruption throughout the week or as long as necessary,” Trump wrote on social media. –0–
