BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) — Two giant pandas died in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, according to an official statement released Saturday.
A joint statement from the Hangzhou Municipal Forestry and Water Resources Bureau, the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, said Banban, a panda from Hangzhou Safari Park, and Xiangguo, a panda from Hangzhou Zoo, died of illness on February 9 and 10, respectively, despite receiving medical treatment.
Autopsies revealed that Banban died of intestinal obstruction, and Xiangguo of intestinal volvulus. Both conditions led to multiple organ failure. According to the report, the fatality rate for these acute abdominal diseases in giant pandas reaches 60% and 100%, respectively, making them among the most severe and fatal diseases affecting pandas in captivity.
Authorities announced an investigation at both zoological institutions. The panda enclosures were closed for cleaning, effective immediately on Saturday.
To ensure the health of the remaining giant pandas in Hangzhou, Yiyi and Chunsheng, Yiyi will be returned to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, and Chunsheng will be returned to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. -0-
