Beijing, February 27 (Xinhua) — China will continue to play its own constructive role in achieving peace and support all efforts that contribute to this goal, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Friday in response to a question regarding the crisis in Ukraine.
"Peace talks cannot end the crisis overnight, but if we stick to dialogue, there is hope for peace," Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing.
She noted that on February 25, Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held an in-depth exchange of views on the Ukrainian crisis during their meeting. Outlining China's principled position, Xi Jinping emphasized that the key to finding a solution lies in consistent dialogue and negotiations, adding that it is important to ensure the equal participation of all parties and lay a solid foundation for peace, guarantee the reasonable concerns of all parties are taken into account, and strengthen the desire for peace; ensure the achievement of universal security and build a lasting peace architecture.
Mao Ning stated that since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, China has been consistently committed to promoting peace talks and a political settlement of the crisis.
"Although disagreements between the parties currently persist, it's important that negotiations are ongoing and the parties are beginning to focus on resolving the underlying issues surrounding this crisis. The Chinese side welcomes this," the diplomat said.
China hopes that President Xi Jinping's proposal to resolve the crisis will provide useful lessons for negotiations between the parties involved, the official added.
