Beijing, February 27 (Xinhua) — Air quality in China will reach its highest level on record in 2025, Li Tianwei, head of the Atmospheric Environment Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, announced on Friday.

As Li Tianwei noted at a press conference, by the end of 2025, the average concentration of PM2.5 particulate matter in cities at and above prefecture-level nationwide was 28.0 μg per cubic meter, the proportion of days with excellent air quality reached 89.3 percent, and the proportion of days with severe pollution reached 0.9 percent. All three indicators were the best ever recorded.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), PM2.5 concentrations nationwide decreased by 20 percent, the official added.

According to Li Tianwei, the gross regional product of 29 cities currently exceeds 1 trillion yuan (about 144.45 billion US dollars), and the average PM2.5 concentration in these cities is 27.8 micrograms per cubic meter, which is better than the national average.

“All of these cities have shown remarkable improvements during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, proving that economic growth and blue sky protection can go hand in hand, achieving mutual benefits,” Li Tianwei added. –0–
