Budapest, February 27 (Xinhua) — Freight traffic on the Hungarian section of the railway connecting Budapest with Belgrade officially resumed just after midnight on Friday. The first train departed from Ferencváros Station in Budapest.
The Budapest-Belgrade railway is a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative, jointly implemented by China, Hungary and Serbia to connect the two capitals.
The Hungarian section, approximately 158.6 km long, is an electrified line designed for both passenger and freight transport, with a maximum speed of 160 km per hour.
The Serbian section of the railway was fully commissioned in October 2025.
Once the entire railway line is open, travel time between Budapest and Belgrade will be reduced from eight hours to approximately three and a half hours. –0–
