URUMQI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — The import and export volume of small-scale border trade in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reached 209.09 billion yuan (30.2 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025, ranking first in the country for the fourth consecutive year, official data showed.

As an outpost of China's opening-up to the west, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) has in recent years fully utilized its geographical advantages to consistently deepen border trade cooperation with neighboring countries. In 2025, the region's total foreign trade volume exceeded RMB 500 billion for the first time, growing 19.9 percent year-on-year. XUAR ranked first among all regions in the country in terms of trade growth, significantly driven by small-scale border trade.

To further facilitate border trade, Xinjiang continues to steadily improve its checkpoint infrastructure and implement innovative customs clearance models. Breakthroughs have already been achieved in the construction of several smart checkpoints: in particular, the first China-Kyrgyzstan freight corridor has been made operational 24/7, significantly improving the efficiency of customs clearance.

To date, Xinjiang has established eight mechanisms for inter-regional trade and economic cooperation with adjacent areas of neighboring countries.

As announced at a meeting on promoting and planning decisive optimization of the business environment in Xinjiang held on Wednesday, in 2026, Xinjiang plans to accelerate the modernization of border checkpoints, extend the opening hours of major automobile checkpoints, and support the improvement of warehouse logistics conditions for border trade, providing guarantees for its sustainable and healthy development.
