Rio de Janeiro, February 26 (Xinhua) — The death toll from torrential rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has risen to 46, with 21 more people missing, official figures were released Wednesday.

Forty of the victims lived in the hardest-hit city of Juiz de Fora, and six in the neighboring municipality of Ubá. Authorities say 19 people are missing in Juiz de Fora, and two more are missing in Ubá.

Around 3,000 people in Juiz de Fora and 26,000 in Ube were left homeless. In addition, 400 and 178 residents in these two towns, respectively, were evacuated due to the risk of landslides and flooding.

Authorities in the cities of Juiz de Fora and Matias Barbosa declared a state of public disaster to access federal resources and expedite the emergency response. Classes in all municipal schools were suspended.

Torrential rains, which intensified on Monday afternoon, caused rivers to overflow, leading to the closure of bridges and underpasses, as well as fallen trees and road closures. February has already become the wettest month on record in Juiz de Fora, with precipitation more than double the historical average.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the victims and rescuers, and Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema declared three days of official mourning in the region. The country's Ministry of Defense is supporting emergency measures, deploying troops to clear debris, provide logistical assistance, and set up temporary shelters. Army helicopters are also participating in humanitarian operations.
