BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Wednesday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is in China on an official visit.
Xi Jinping noted that China and Germany are the second and third largest economies in the world, and their bilateral relations affect not only the interests of the two countries, but also have a significant impact on Europe and the entire world.
The international situation is currently undergoing its most profound transformation since the end of World War II, the Chinese leader emphasized, adding that the more chaotic and confusing the global situation becomes, the more important it is for the two countries to strengthen strategic communication, strengthen strategic mutual trust, and achieve new progress in the Sino-German comprehensive strategic partnership.
The Chinese President put forward three proposals for the further development of Chinese-German relations.
First, Xi Jinping pointed out, the two sides must be reliable partners who support each other.
China and Germany are self-reliant and developing rapidly, he emphasized, noting that both countries adhere to the principles of mutual respect, mutual trust, and open cooperation, writing a successful history of mutual benefit and win-win.
According to the Chinese President, China is pursuing a path of peaceful development and has the capacity and confidence to pursue Chinese-style modernization. He assured that China will continue to share its development opportunities with Germany and the world.
The Chinese President expressed hope that the German side will objectively and rationally assess China's development, pursue a positive and pragmatic policy towards it, and work together to ensure the sustainable and stable development of bilateral relations.
Secondly, Xi Jinping continued, the two countries should pursue an innovative partnership, adhering to openness and mutual benefit.
The German government has put forward new development strategies in areas such as technology, innovation and digital development, the Chinese President stated, pointing out that they are largely consistent with China's goals of achieving intelligent, green and integrated development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).
Xi Jinping said the two sides should strengthen the alignment of development strategies, support the two-way circulation of talent, knowledge and technology, and promote dialogue and cooperation in artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.
Both sides need to properly understand the relationship between competition and cooperation, explore ways to collaborate that lead to mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, and jointly maintain the stability and smooth operation of production and supply chains, the Chinese leader added.
Thirdly, Xi Jinping emphasized, the two countries should be partners in cultural and humanitarian exchanges that understand each other and are close to each other.
As countries with deep cultural heritage, he noted, China and Germany should strengthen mutual cultural learning and intensify people-to-people exchanges to strengthen the social foundation of Sino-German friendship.
The Chinese leader stressed that in the face of accelerating global changes unseen in a century, all countries must work together to overcome difficulties and share a common destiny.
According to him, China and Germany should support the central position of the UN, revive its leading role and take the initiative in upholding multilateralism, implementing the rule of international law, protecting free trade, and promoting solidarity and coordination.
Xi Jinping emphasized that China supports Europe's aspirations for independence and self-reliance. He expressed hope that Europe will be able to meet China halfway, firmly uphold the concept of a strategic partnership, openness, inclusiveness, and mutually beneficial cooperation, striving for further progress in China-EU relations and making an even greater contribution to world peace and development.
The two leaders exchanged views on the Ukrainian crisis. Xi Jinping outlined China's principled position and emphasized that the key to resolving the issue is a firm commitment to dialogue and negotiations.
As the Chinese President pointed out, it is important to ensure equal participation of all parties and lay a solid foundation for peace, take into account the legitimate interests of all parties and strengthen the desire for peace, ensure universal security and build a solid peace architecture. –0–
