WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) — The U.S. State Department on Monday ordered the evacuation of non-critical American staff from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

"The Department of State has ordered the evacuation of non-critical American personnel and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut," the State Department said in a statement, without providing a reason.

“We continually evaluate the security situation and, based on our latest assessment, have deemed it prudent to reduce our presence to essential personnel,” the statement said. –0–
