Astana, February 23 (Xinhua) — Kazakhstan continues to modernize the Altynkol-Khorgos railway line, which will nearly double its capacity, the Kazinform news agency reported on Monday, citing the country's Ministry of Transport.
The Altynkol station and the Khorgos border crossing form a single railway and border complex and are a key link in the international transport corridor. This hub handles a significant volume of export, import, and transit traffic.
Currently, construction of double tracks on two sections totaling 32 km is underway on the Altynkol – Zhetygen section, along with the development of five new and eight existing passing tracks. These measures will increase the line's capacity from 18 to 33 pairs of trains per day.
Completion of the work is scheduled for 2026. The modernization is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan's role as a transit bridge between Europe and Asia and improve the efficiency of the national transport and logistics system.
