Athens, February 21 (Xinhua) — A wooden boat carrying several dozen migrants capsized on Saturday south of the Greek island of Crete, killing five people and leaving at least 20 others missing, local authorities said.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, the incident occurred approximately 27 km south of the village of Kala Limena on the southern coast of Crete.
According to Greek state television channel ERT, the tragedy occurred when a commercial vessel dispatched by the national search and rescue center approached the boat. The migrants attempted to board via a lowered ladder, but too many people crowded onto one side of the boat, causing it to capsize.
Survivors said there were approximately 50 people on board. Rescuers fear the death toll could rise. The search operation is ongoing, involving coast guard ships, nearby merchant vessels, a helicopter, and a military aircraft.
