Thanks to the project Traffic Management Center The Moscow High-Speed Diameter (MSD) has increased the capacity of the Perovskaya overpass by 1.5 times following the re-marking. By adding new lanes on the exit ramp from the eastbound to the southbound direction of the Moscow High-Speed Diameter (MSD), forced lane changes have been eliminated and traffic flow has been smoother.

"As part of the transport development strategy through 2030, approved by Sergei Sobyanin, we continue to improve road infrastructure. On the Perovskaya overpass, according to the TsODD project, the road markings were changed and a lane was added for comfortable travel. This allowed us to increase the section's capacity by 1.5 times and eliminate lane changes, which often cause accidents," noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

A number of changes were implemented last year through re-marking, according to the Central Traffic Management Center (TsODD) plan, as part of a project to ensure comfortable and safe travel on a section of the Perovskaya overpass that had previously caused traffic congestion.

Previously, when exiting the Moscow Highway from the eastbound to the southbound lanes, drivers encountered a bottleneck where the two overpass lanes narrowed into one. This led to traffic congestion and increased the risk of collisions, as drivers were forced to abruptly change lanes and brake. In July 2025, according to the Moscow Traffic Management Center's (TsODD) design, specialists changed the traffic pattern and added a lane at the turn from the Perovskaya Overpass onto the Moscow Highway. The merger between the overpass and Budyonny Avenue traffic was also expanded to three lanes instead of two. The transitional/express lane was retained, ensuring that exiting the Moscow Highway from the overpass remains convenient and safe. The new markings allow vehicles to seamlessly merge into traffic without slowing down the main flow.

After seven months of monitoring, analysts confirmed that the re-markings made traffic flow more smooth and safe. This year, re-markings will improve traffic flow at more than 100 sections of Moscow.

Since 2018, Moscow has been actively implementing traffic improvement projects. Narrowing creates additional lanes for straight-ahead travel or for new turns and U-turns in areas where widening the roadway through construction is difficult. Changing road markings improves traffic conditions without unnecessary expense or the need for lengthy lane closures. Furthermore, adding lanes through re-marking is much faster than traditional road widening. This makes this method particularly suitable for dense traffic conditions, both in confined urban spaces and on busy highways.

On the Moscow Ring Road, lanes are added by slightly narrowing the edge lanes and eliminating shoulders in certain heavily congested areas. This allows more vehicles to travel through these sections in the same amount of time, eliminating the bottleneck effect. Transition lanes help make exits and exits from the Moscow Ring Road safer. When a driver enters the highway, they must simultaneously accelerate and merge into the main traffic flow to avoid slowing down other vehicles. If an exiting vehicle stops before changing lanes and slowly merges into the right lane, a chain reaction of braking by other vehicles or a dangerous situation occurs, leading to a reduction in traffic speed both on the exit and in the outer lanes of the Moscow Ring Road. Transition lanes help mitigate this effect, preventing slowdowns in the transit lanes.
