Astana, February 19 (Xinhua) — The Senate of Kazakhstan's parliament approved a law ratifying an intergovernmental agreement with China on the implementation of renewable energy projects, the Kazinform news agency reported on Thursday.
As Senator Olga Bulavkina noted, the agreement was signed in November 2024 during the COP29 climate conference and is aimed at developing mutually beneficial cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in the field of renewable energy and sustainable development.
According to the document, Kazakhstan plans to build three large renewable energy facilities with a total installed capacity of 1.8 GW, including two wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.5 GW and one solar power plant with a capacity of 300 MW. The projects will be implemented in the Pavlodar, Karaganda, and Turkestan regions, with completion scheduled for 2027-2029. Samruk-Energy, the Kazakh national company, will act as a co-investor in the projects.
According to O. Bulavkina, the projects' implementation will attract more than $2 billion in investment and create over 200 permanent and approximately 2,000 temporary jobs.
As noted, Kazakhstan intends to increase the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production to 15 percent by 2030 as part of its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. –0–
