Specialists at Rosneft's Volgograd Research Institute have developed and patented a device for holding coupons*—samples used to study metal corrosion in pipelines and process units. The unique design of the new coupon holder enhances safety and improves the quality of corrosion testing.
Corrosion testing is a study conducted under various equipment operating conditions, including high temperatures and pressures. Such testing is essential for predicting the remaining life of equipment, planning maintenance, and minimizing the risk of failure.
Using coupons to diagnose and monitor the current condition of process equipment is a proven practice. The design of the new coupon holder improves the speed and ease of sample replacement thanks to its quick-release tip.
Sample positioning also improves the quality of corrosion testing—coupons can now be fixed in a precisely defined position. Safe operation of the device is ensured by a special liquid and gas drainage unit—the coupon can be extracted without any operator intervention. The combination of these solutions distinguishes the development from similar devices.
Organizing high-quality monitoring of equipment condition and forecasting its service life allows the Company to ensure trouble-free production operations, safe working conditions, and minimize environmental impacts.
* Coupons are metal samples in the form of small metal plates that are exposed to the internal environment during the operation of pipelines or process installations to determine the rate and type of metal corrosion.
