St. Petersburg, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) — The Chinese Lantern Festival (Zigong Lantern Festival) kicked off Sunday evening on Zayachy Island near the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg ahead of the Spring Festival (Chinese Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese New Year).

The event is part of the 12th citywide festival "Chinese New Year – Happy Spring Festival" and will last 12 days – until February 27 inclusive.

The outdoor exhibition features ten unique light installations created by artisans from Zigong, Sichuan Province, a city renowned for its millennia-long history of creating light installations recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of China. Among the illuminated installations is the symbol of 2026—a fire horse, which embodies strength, power, and the pursuit of happiness and self-improvement.

This is the first time a Chinese lantern exhibition has been held in St. Petersburg. In honor of the Spring Festival, the Palace Bridge, the Lakhta Center skyscraper, and the city's TV tower were also lit up red on the same day. –0–
