Bishkek, February 12 (Xinhua) — Deputy Marlen Mamataliev was elected as the new speaker of the Zhogorku Kenesh (unicameral parliament) of Kyrgyzstan on Thursday, according to the Kyrgyz parliament's website.

At a parliamentary session held on Thursday, the election of the speaker of the legislative body was considered. Several parliamentary groups nominated M. Mamataliev. Following a secret ballot, M. Mamataliev was elected as the new speaker of the Zhogorku Kenesh.

Earlier that day, former Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu announced his resignation. He declared his readiness to serve the country's future as a rank-and-file member of parliament, along with other members of parliament.

Born in 1981, M. Mamataliev previously worked in various departments, including the Ministry of Finance and the Government Office of Kyrgyzstan. He was elected to parliament in 2018, 2021, and 2025. –0–
