BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Wednesday called for comprehensively promoting scientific and technological innovation, industrial development and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to cultivate new productive forces and promote high-quality development.

Li Qiang made the announcement while chairing a State Council meeting on AI development.

According to the Premier of the State Council, China needs to deeply understand the development trends of AI, encourage breakthroughs across the entire value chain, and widely implement AI in various scenarios to better unleash the development potential of relevant technologies.

The head of the Chinese government called for the development of forward-looking strategies for new technologies and new methods, the promotion of large-scale and commercial applications, better coordination of key resources—from big data to computing power and energy supply, expansion of international technology exchanges, and strengthening AI governance by improving legislation, policy frameworks, application standards, and ethical norms.

In addition, China must create an open and inclusive development environment and cultivate a larger pool of multidisciplinary specialists, Li Qiang added.

Zhou Bowen, head of the Shanghai AI Lab, delivered a keynote address at the meeting. Vice Premiers Ding Xuexiang and Zhang Guoqing, as well as State Councilor Wu Zhenglong, participated in the discussion.
