Beijing, February 11 (Xinhua) — Evidence of the forced recruitment of "comfort women" by Japanese militarists is "ironclad" and irrefutable. China expresses serious concern over Japan's erroneous position and dishonest behavior regarding its history of aggression, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Wednesday.
The Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women and girls and other special mechanisms of the UN Human Rights Council recently sent a joint letter to the Government of Japan expressing serious concern that Tokyo is denying comfort women victims the right to truth and reparation.
In response to a question about this, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that the forced recruitment of "comfort women" is a serious crime of Japanese militarism and a gross violation of the victims' rights. Lin Jian called the evidence of this crime "cast-iron" and irrefutable, noting that it has provoked widespread outrage from the entire international community.
According to a Chinese diplomat, some forces in Japan have long tried to deny and even distort the history of forced recruitment of "comfort women."
Japan needs to deeply reflect on its history of aggression and the terrible suffering it inflicted on the victims of its crimes, properly, fairly and responsibly resolve the issue of “comfort women” and other issues left over from the past, and earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community through concrete actions, Lin Jian concluded. –0–
