Astana, February 11 /Xinhua/ — Ancient bronze coins dating back to the 8th-12th centuries were recently discovered in the Zhambyl region of southern Kazakhstan. This was reported on Tuesday by the Kazinform news agency, citing specialized publications.

Archaeological finds were made near the village of Besagash. According to historians, some of the coins were minted in the city of Taraz, as well as at the courts of the Chinese Tang and Song dynasties.

Experts associate the finds with the active period of the Great Silk Road, which passed through Taraz. Scientists emphasize that the coins provide further evidence of the region's intensive trade ties between the 8th and 12th centuries.

According to archaeologists, a total of 46 coins and ceramic fragments were discovered during excavations near Besagash last year. In addition to bronze specimens, copper coins from the 13th century and silver dirhams minted in Otrar (a settlement in the Otyrar district of Kazakhstan's Turkestan region) were also found.

All artifacts are planned to be donated to local museums. As noted by the Zhambyl Regional Museum, the region boasts one of the most significant numismatic collections in Kazakhstan, allowing us to trace the historical development of the region and the political history of medieval states.
