Tokyo, February 10 (Xinhua) — Japan's Diet will convene for an extraordinary session on February 18 to elect a prime minister following Sunday's House of Representatives (lower house) elections, the Jiji News Agency reported on Tuesday.
As noted, the Japanese Constitution stipulates that an extraordinary session of the Diet must be convened within 30 days of the House of Representatives election to appoint a prime minister. On the opening day of the session, the current cabinet resigns collectively, after which the newly elected House of Representatives and the current House of Councillors separately vote on the candidacy of a new prime minister, who then forms a new government.
Given that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) currently holds more than two-thirds of the seats in the lower house, Japanese media are confident that party leader and current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will remain in office. –0–
