London, February 8 (Xinhua) — Morgan McSweeney has resigned as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff amid accusations from members of Parliament over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the United States, the British news channel Sky News reported on Sunday.
"The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country, and trust in politics itself. When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make this appointment, and I take full responsibility for that advice," McSweeney said in his resignation letter, published by local media.
"In public life, responsibility must be assumed when it matters most, not just when it's most convenient. Under the current circumstances, the only dignified option is to resign," added M. McSweeney.
Starmer apologised on January 5 for his decision to appoint Mandelson as ambassador after new revelations about the former official's links to the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein sparked a political scandal in Britain.
