St. Petersburg, February 5 (Xinhua) — Russian customs officials discovered a fragment of the Aletai meteorite while scanning a shipping container at the port of St. Petersburg. The fragment was being illegally exported to the United Kingdom, the press service of Russia's Northwestern Customs Administration reported on Thursday.

The meteorite fragment was imported into Russia from a member state of the Eurasian Economic Union. When attempting to export it from the Russian Federation, it was declared as a landscape sculpture. An expert assessment determined that the fragment's value is approximately 323 million rubles (approximately $4.2 million).

A criminal case has been opened regarding the smuggling of strategically important goods and resources or cultural assets, and an investigation is underway. –0–
