Washington, February 4 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that California can use a new congressional district map. This comes as midterm elections approach, in which Democrats and Republicans will compete, among other things, for control of the House of Representatives.
"The motion for an injunction pending the appeal, submitted to Judge /Elena/ Kagan and referred by her to the /Supreme/ Court, is denied," the brief ruling states. No further details are provided.
California Republicans and the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit last year over redistricting, claiming it was racially biased. However, a federal court disagreed with their arguments. On January 20, the plaintiffs filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court.
A new Democratic-favored map was approved by California voters in early November last year. Democrats responded to the August redistricting in Texas that favored Republicans.
The changes could give the Democratic Party the potential to gain up to five House seats in California in this year's midterm elections, and Republicans the same number in Texas.
Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio have also redrew their district lines in favor of Republicans, while Utah has redrew its lines in favor of Democrats. Such attempts have occasionally been met with lawsuits. Several other states, including New York and Florida, are also considering redrawing their congressional districts. –0–
