Gaza, February 5 /Xinhua/ — Palestinian resistance groups have agreed not to surrender their weapons, senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad official Mohammed al-Hindi announced on Wednesday.
"There is a consensus among the rebel groups to retain the weapons of the Palestinian people, and we have shown flexibility with the mediators regarding their use," he said.
Earlier in the day, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to eliminate Hamas if it refused to disarm and threatened renewed military action in Gaza.
On Tuesday, during a meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his "uncompromising demand for the disarmament of Hamas, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, and the achievement of military objectives before reconstruction begins," the Prime Minister's Office reported.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad is the second-largest armed group in Gaza. Hamas has previously stated that it would lay down its arms if Israel ended its occupation.
