Algiers, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Algerian Western Mining Railway, Africa's first heavy-duty desert railway, has opened to traffic, improving Algeria's national rail network and boosting transport and economic development in the country's southwestern regions.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially launched the railway line at a ceremony held on Sunday in the southwestern province of Bechar.

The 950-km-long road, 575 km of which were built by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and Algerian state-owned companies, is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by a Chinese company in Algeria.

More than 8,000 Chinese and Algerian workers completed the project in 24 months under challenging Sahara Desert conditions, achieving significant success and setting new records in local railway construction.

According to local media, the railway will be able to transport 50 million tons of iron ore per year, as well as meet the needs of passenger transportation, providing convenience for residents along the route. –0–
