Antananarivo, February 3 (Xinhua) — Tropical Cyclone Fitia has killed seven people and affected more than 54,000 residents of Madagascar, Malagasy authorities reported on Monday.
More than 1,400 homes were destroyed and more than 9,000 were flooded, particularly in the northwest regions and the capital, Antananarivo, the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management said in its latest bulletin, released Monday morning.
In total, the cyclone affected 27 districts of Madagascar. It struck the country from the west on Saturday morning, then moved out to sea on Sunday through Vatomandry, a town on the east coast.
Meteorological services are forecasting further rainfall in the northern and central-western regions in the coming days. –0–
