OSLO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday condemned the United States for its "condescending and divisive targeting" of the island.
In a statement released ahead of an emergency session of the Greenlandic parliament, he also stressed that continued US pressure on Greenland is “unacceptable.”
Greenland has found itself in a difficult situation over the past 14 months, the Prime Minister noted, pointing to repeated US statements, including recent ones, about its intention to establish control over the island.
Although talk of a possible military takeover has recently been disavowed, the United States continues to seek to annex Greenland and is looking for an opportunity to take control of the island, he said.
J.-F. Nielsen noted that such rhetoric comes not only from US President Donald Trump, but also from other key decision-makers and close allies. They are characterized by a "condescending and divisive focus" on Greenland and its people, the prime minister added.
The Greenlandic government has declared such attempts "unacceptable" and confirmed that the island is part of Denmark, he said.
J.-F. Nielsen also noted that, despite the tense situation, Greenland has begun dialogue with the United States through high-level official channels and his government will work to ensure that the negotiations produce “concrete results.” –0–
