JERUSALEM, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — The Israeli and U.S. navies conducted joint exercises in the Red Sea on Sunday, the Israeli military said Monday, underscoring strengthened maritime cooperation as regional tensions with Iran continue to mount.
Israeli Navy ships and a US Navy destroyer that arrived in the Red Sea took part in the exercises, the military reported.
They said the exercises were part of ongoing strategic coordination between the Israeli navy and the US 5th Fleet, which is responsible for operations in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Oman.
The exercises took place amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, as Washington issued warnings to Tehran and strengthened its naval presence in the region.
