PHNOM PENH/BANGKOK, July 28 (Xinhua) — Armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai soldiers over disputed border areas continued for a fifth day, both sides said Monday.
Cambodian Deputy State Secretary and Defense Ministry spokesperson Lt. Gen. Mali Socheat said the Thai side opened fire first in the early morning, while the Thai military said Cambodia continued to attack throughout the night.
“Despite the fact that a special meeting of the heads of government of the two countries will be held in Kuala Lumpur /Malaysia/ today to negotiate a ceasefire, at 03:10 local time, the Thai side was the first to open fire on Cambodia in the disputed border areas and continued to do so until 05:07,” said Mali Sochheata.
She added that the number of Cambodians evacuated from border provinces has so far risen to 39,828 families /about 134,707 people/. A total of 600 schools have been closed, affecting about 150,000 students and 6,000 teachers.
According to her, at present, about 400 thousand Cambodian migrants who worked in Thailand have returned home.
On Monday, reports from sources connected to the Thai army appeared on social media that clashes in the border areas of Thailand and Cambodia were continuing for a fifth day, and Cambodian troops have not yet ceased fire.
As of Sunday, 14 Thai civilians and eight soldiers had been killed and 37 civilians injured in border clashes. A total of 139,646 people had been evacuated from border areas, according to figures released by the Thai government on Sunday. –0–
