MANILA, February 1 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the ferry capsizing off the coast of Basilan province in the southern Philippines has risen to 40, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Sunday.

Search and rescue operations have been ongoing for nearly a week after the ferry, which was traveling from Zamboanga City to Jolo City in Sulu Province, sank northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island.

According to the BOF, at least 316 people were rescued. Authorities are still working to determine the exact number of passengers on board.
