BANGKOK, February 1 (Xinhua) — Early voting for Thailand's House of Representatives elections began at 8:00 a.m. local time on Sunday. More than 2 million voters who will not be able to cast their ballots on the official election day on February 8 are participating.
Voters were given two ballots: one to elect a candidate for the House of Representatives from their electoral district, and one to vote for their preferred political party. Early voting will close at 5:00 PM that same day, and all ballots will be counted together after February 8.
More than 50 million Thai voters will elect a total of 500 members of the House of Representatives, of which 400 will be elected from local constituencies, and the remaining 100 seats will be distributed among political parties based on the share of the votes they received in the elections.
According to statistics from the Election Commission of Thailand, 57 political parties are vying for seats in the House of Representatives and have nominated over 90 candidates for prime minister. Final official results are expected to be released no later than April 9. The new parliament must convene within 15 days to elect a speaker, after which the House of Representatives will vote to elect a new prime minister.
In the run-up to the elections, the parties participating in them, as well as their candidates for seats in parliament and the post of prime minister, held campaign rallies across the country, and the streets and alleys were covered with campaign advertisements. –0–
