JOHANNESBURG, January 29 (Xinhua) — At least 11 people were killed and eight others injured in a road accident on the R102 highway near Lotus Park, south of Durban, in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, on Thursday morning, local media reported.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation, citing ALS Paramedics, the local emergency services, reported that 11 people, including one child, died at the scene after a truck collided with a minibus. Eight more people were seriously injured and taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
ALS Ambulance Service spokesman Garrith Jamieson said the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. local time /5:30 a.m. GMT, adding that the truck left the road during the collision, pinning the minibus against a tree.
He urged motorists to use alternative routes while emergency services and police continued rescue efforts.
