Harbin, January 29 (Xinhua) — China has officially approved the opening of the country's first ice highway, aimed at winter travel enthusiasts. The 100-kilometer ice highway runs through the mountainous and forested city of Mohe and extends north to the area near the Heilongjiang (Amur) River, which shares a border with Russia.

Mohe, located in Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, is the northernmost point of China and the only place in the country where one can enjoy the aurora borealis. This is why the new seasonal route has been dubbed the "Northern Polar Ice Route."

According to the project's initiators, the route is intended to become a new attraction for motorists thanks to its unique adventure and tourism elements, such as extremely low temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius, a polar landscape along a border river, and diverse multi-ethnic cultures.

The extensive ice route will not only keep travelers entertained but also offer surprises and thrills. Along the route, unique ice and snow signposts and decorative installations featuring car license plate walls offer stunning photo opportunities and selfies. A tourist camp has been set up to demonstrate the traditional customs of the indigenous Oroqen ethnic group, where road travelers can experience the Oroqen people for a day. The route also connects with popular tourist attractions, including the Northern Polar Village and aurora observation points.

Ensuring safe travel on the ice road is a top priority. A professional security team was deployed for this purpose, equipped with specialized road clearing equipment and radars for real-time ice thickness monitoring.

On the very first day of the Northern Polar Ice Route's opening, January 27, approximately 200 travelers gathered in 100 vehicles from across the country, including the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, the provinces of Jiangsu, Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. They witnessed the historic opening of the country's first ice route.

Following this, on January 28th, the ice track was used for ice racing with the participation of motorists. And starting on Thursday, January 29th, the ice track was fully open to the public. -0-
