Niamey, January 29 (Xinhua) — Heavy gunfire and powerful explosions were heard near Amani Diori International Airport in Niger's capital Niamey on Thursday morning.

Residents of areas near the airport reported that gunfire and explosions began shortly after midnight and continued for about two hours. Several users of the social media site X posted videos and messages claiming to have seen flashes of light in the night sky above the airport, accompanied by continuous gunfire.

The situation has now returned to normal, and all military camps in Niamey have been put on alert.

Government authorities and airport management have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. There have been no official reports of casualties or injuries.

Amani Diori International Airport is located approximately 10 kilometers from Niger's presidential palace. The airport houses an air force base, a recently established drone base, and the headquarters of the joint forces of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali fighting jihadist groups.
