COLOMBO, January 29 (Xinhua) — The inauguration of the "Happy Chinese New Year 2026" cultural events series was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday.

The gala evening, jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, featured artists from the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture (Yunnan Province, southwest China). They presented the audience with authentic Bai culture, including songs, dances, and traditional music.

The gala evening was attended by approximately 1,200 people, including the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Jagath Wickramaratne, the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, senior officials of the Sri Lankan government, as well as Chinese citizens residing on the island and the local public.

Speaking at the event, Qi Zhenhong stated that 2026 is considered the Year of the Horse according to the traditional calendar. In Chinese culture, this animal symbolizes effort, loyalty, and success, which aligns well with the spirit of optimism and perseverance valued in Sri Lanka, he noted. The ambassador wished China and Sri Lanka further and greater achievements in their pursuit of national development in the new year.
