BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, beginning a four-day official visit to China.

In August 2024, at the initiative of the British side, a telephone conversation took place between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Keir Starmer, and in November of the same year, during the Chinese President's participation in the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, they met, which put Sino-British relations on the path of improvement and development.

During Starmer's visit, which will be the first by a British Prime Minister to China in eight years, Xi Jinping will meet with him, Premier Li Qiang will hold talks with him, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji will also meet with Starmer. The two sides are expected to have an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.

In addition to Beijing, he will also visit Shanghai.

Since the UK Labour government came to power, it has made clear its commitment to developing a coherent, strong and strategic relationship with China and actively promoting dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.

K. Starmer leads a delegation comprising senior executives from over 50 major British firms and representatives of British institutions. They represent the country's leading sectors, including finance, medicine, manufacturing, and culture.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that China wants to use the visit as an opportunity to strengthen political mutual trust with the UK, deepen practical cooperation, jointly write a new chapter in the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations, and work together for global peace, security, and stability. -0-
