LOS ANGELES, January 28 (Xinhua) — A man is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound in an incident involving U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said it responded to the incident in Arivaca, an unincorporated area of the county located about 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, local media reported.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time / 2:30 p.m. GMT. Border Patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle they believed belonged to a man suspected of human trafficking.

The driver attempted to flee and opened fire on a pursuing border patrol agent, who returned fire and wounded the man.

The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital, local media reported.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed at a press conference that the suspect has been identified as Patrick Gary Schlegel, who lives in Arizona. –0–
