Lighting and backlighting
Since 2011, Moscow has been implementing a program to improve street lighting and develop the city's color and lighting environment. New streetlights are equipped with modern energy-efficient lamps, which reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent.
Over these years, 536,000 outdoor lighting fixtures have been installed in the city. Their number has more than doubled to 885,000. At the beginning of 2011, there were 349,000 such fixtures. The number of buildings and structures with architectural and artistic lighting has more than quadrupled, reaching 2,390. In 2025, 58,000 outdoor lighting fixtures were installed.
More than two thousand new street lamps have been installed in the New Moscow.
In 2025, architectural and artistic lighting adorned approximately 100 sites. These included the Moskvich Cultural Center on Volgogradsky Prospekt, several churches, including one on Malakhitovaya Street in Rostokino, as well as in the Krylatskoye and Tagansky districts, and the historic building housing the St. Alexander Nevsky Church on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street.
The façade of the Grand Sports Arena at the Luzhniki Olympic Complex was transformed into a multimedia space thanks to unique video mapping technology and dynamic lighting. The centerpiece of the space is a new ice rink with various installations.
The program to improve street lighting and develop the lighting and color environment will continue in 2026. Plans call for the installation of over 26,000 additional outdoor lighting fixtures, primarily in courtyards, playgrounds, and sports fields. Architectural and artistic lighting will be installed at 139 city facilities.
Thus, architectural and artistic lighting is planned to decorate the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 10 1st Kapotninsky Proezd, the Interfax news agency building at 2 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street, Building 2, as well as 22 landmarks on Profsoyuznaya Street, which will be landscaped in 2025.
Navigation
Furthermore, since 2014, Moscow has been implementing a project to create a unified pedestrian navigation system, under which 108,100 house signs and 16,200 freestanding city signs have been installed throughout the city.
"All navigation elements comply with the developed standard: blue signs with white letters are easy to read and seamlessly integrated into the architectural space of the streets. Some of them feature QR codes, which can be used to learn about prominent residents of the capital," the Moscow Mayor added.

QR codes began appearing on signs in 2020. By scanning them with a smartphone camera, you can learn about the prominent citizens who lived in a particular building or whose memory is commemorated by sculptures and memorial plaques. The project was implemented in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The first signs to appear were those for the Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Gora, the houses where marshals and heroes of the Soviet Union lived, and war memorials. Later, information about space explorers, polar explorers, writers, and composers was added to the project.
In 2025, to mark the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War, pedestrian navigation in Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill became more comprehensive and informative.
Plans for 2026 include the installation of 2,400 house signs and a thousand free-standing city signs.
