Urumqi, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) — The 3rd Altai Mountains Winter Spartakiad opened on Tuesday in the city of Altai, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR, Northwestern China).

The sporting event will run until January 30. It is attended by 13 delegations, including more than 200 athletes and coaches, from China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and other countries and regions.

Participants in the Spartakiad compete in 16 disciplines across three sports: cross-country skiing, speed skating, and ski mountaineering.

The Altai Mountains stretch for over 2,000 km and are located in four countries: China, Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. The first Altai Mountains Winter Spartakiad was held in January 2024 in the city of Altai. The event is becoming an increasingly important means of showcasing the advantages of the region's ice and snow resources and promoting international sports and cultural exchanges.
