MANILA, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) — The Tabaco City Council in Albay province on Luzon island in the Philippines on Tuesday declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing eruption of the Mayon Volcano.

According to city authorities, more than 1,700 residents were evacuated from settlements located within the volcano's 6-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Under Philippine law, declaring a state of emergency allows local governments to access their rapid response funds and facilitates the disbursement of national disaster assistance. –0–
